Another shot of the various terraced levels of the falls area. These were all built first with concrete blocks, then covered (twice) with mortar veneer to simulate Pacific lava rock formations. The coloring is a combination of concrete stain colors either dabbed or sprayed on with a garden sprayer.
Each terraced area is its own partition, with overflow & drainage control built-in. This makes each its own "rain garden" for trapping/controlling the rain runoff. It fit great with Kansas City's 10,000 rain gardens project to control runoff in steep areas... except that we didn't get any rain this year, and had to 'fill' them manually (with a hose) to keep the plants healthy. As such, we didn't do much for the eco-system this year, but we sure kept the water department healthy!
